The IARI Alumni Association is proud to share the momentous news of the appointment of our distinguished alumnus, Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, as the new Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Government of India.
This prestigious appointment, approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, places Dr. Jat at the helm of India’s apex agricultural research body for a period of three years. He succeeds Dr. Himanshu Pathak, another proud IARI alumnus, who has recently taken charge as the Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

Dr. Jat now joins a lineage of IARI alumni who have held this top position, including:

- Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, currently Chairperson, PPV&FRA, Government of India
🌱 A Journey Rooted in IARI
Dr. Jat earned his Ph.D. in Agronomy from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, specializing in Soil Moisture Conservation in Rainfed Pearl Millet. Since then, he has built a stellar career as a Systems Agronomist, dedicating over 25 years to advancing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems.
His leadership roles span prestigious global institutions including ICRISAT, CIMMYT, and IRRI, and his contributions to Conservation Agriculture, Precision Farming, and Climate-Smart Agriculture have been recognized both nationally and internationally.
A Fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), Dr. Jat is also a recipient of ICAR’s Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award among several other accolades.
